This is the first thing you notice when you leave the warm lobby with a cup of hot tea in your hands: people stand motionless, tilting their heads, and are silent. The silence here is special — not awkward, but collected, as if everyone stopped breathing at once, so as not to frighten what is happening in the sky. Someone holds the phone, picking it up with both hands, but forgets to press the record button. Someone is just looking. And you can see from the faces — here it is, why they were traveling halfway across the country, and sometimes halfway across the world.
The village stands forty minutes from Murmansk, amidst hills and a rare northern forest. During the day, almost nothing happens here: snow, silence, smoke from the tubes above the domes, a short gray light, which by two o’clock in the afternoon already begins fade. Guests walk, snowmobilize, feed deer, drink tea with cloudberries, and slowly get nervous. They check the weather forecast more often than they check the mail. Every evening the guide comes out to them with the same question and the same answer: today there is a chance, but the sky decides for itself. It’s fair, and that’s why when the sky finally decides, the effect is stronger than any promise.
The domes are made of transparent material and this changes the everything. There’s no need to get up at three o’clock in the morning, dress in five layers and go somewhere in the dark knee-deep in the snow.
